When choosing your fishing line, you can consider things like:
- Strength: Also known as test, the strength of fishing line is measured in pounds and should match the weight of the fish you’re targeting. For example, you might use 4-pound test line for trout and 30-pound test line for tuna. However, even new line will be less than 80% of its rated strength once you’ve tied a hook or lure to it.
- Durability: If you’re fishing around underwater structures, you might want a more durable line.
- Tension: If you’re fishing in areas with thick cover, you might want a line that can handle more tension.
- Type of line: Different types of line have different properties, such as stretch, visibility, and abrasion resistance. For example, monofilament line is often thin and strong, with good abrasion resistance and stretch. Fluorocarbon line is also thin, but it’s less stretchy and less visible to fish. Steel or wire line is more visible to fish, but it’s also very strong and durable.
- Equipment: Some rods and reels might have recommendations or specifications for line weights. For example, when using monofilament or fluorocarbon on a spinning reel, you might want to use a line that’s less than #12 lb test to avoid line management issues.

Depending on what you’re hoping to hook, the right reel can make the difference! Let our team know what you’re planning and we can help you choose the right fishing reel:
- Casting: Modern reels often have features to help with casting distance and accuracy. For example, spinning reels can throw lighter lures farther, especially in windy conditions. They can also be used to skip lures under low-hanging cover.
- Line control: Reels can help control the speed and tension of line retrieval, which can prevent line from snapping or hooks from coming loose.
- Bait: Spinning reels are a good choice for smaller baits and lures, and can be used for ice fishing, panfishing, and other small fish species.

Fishing weights, also known as sinkers or plummets, can help you present your bait better to fish by:
- Sinking your bait: Weights can help you sink your bait or lure to the bottom of the water, especially in deep water or areas with strong currents.
- Holding your bait in place: Weights can help keep your bait in place in currents.
- Making floating lures sink: Weights can make floating lures sink and stand up.
- Increasing casting distance: Weights can help you cast your lure farther.
- Anchoring your bait: Weights can help anchor your bait.
